Hollywood of the East

“Hollywood of the East”, an exotic and mysterious intersection between the East and West.

Madeleine Wozencroft presents a time capsule – depicting a story based on themes of the Orient, glamourized by 1930’s Hollywood creations. Executed in a contemporary style, the campaign honors and respects Chinese traditions with precision through postmodernism. To inspire the modern take on, traditional Chinese mythical creatures and motifs.

A sense of nostalgia is embossed in the collection as it resurrects the ashes of a long-gone era evoking the mysterious, the exotic, the luxurious, and the erotic elements that come to play. A timeless period in history, where the ostentatious extravagant fashion style is heavily characterized by the Hollywood movie stars of that age. (Anna May Wong).

Inspired by the Wong Kar-Wai film, “In The Mood for Love”, the color pallet of “Hollywood of the East”, exposes the melodramatic mood which illustrates a romantic aura, allowing the spectator to engage with their inner desires.  The film; a story of extraordinary love, obstructed by faith, is communicated through whimsical colors that interblend lush reds, bright magentas, rustic oranges, and radiant blues.  

The fabric choices consist of the most explicit cloths, creating elegant flowing lines to exaggerate the female physique. Varieties of silk, velvet, and embroidered textures are used throughout the collection to capture that iconic era of the Golden Years.

 The collection merges fashion with the beauty of Chinese culture, weaving in the designer’s erotic inflictions and personal dilemmas through the textiles produced, causing a process of metamorphosis from the concept into the creation of wearable pieces of art.
